The Natakai Kalari movement in Kerala heralded a vision of theatre training : Theatre, to be taught in an institution using a formal curriculum. Thus, under the able leadership of Prof. G Shankarapillai and later Dr. Vayala Vasudevan Pillai, School of drama opened a new chapter in theatre training in Kerala.

School of drama established in 1977 is one of the foremost institutions in India giving academic training in the practical and theoretical aspects of drama and theatre. The Courses offered are B.T.A (bachelor of theatre arts), M.T.A (master of theatre arts), M.A (music), M.Phil and Ph.D. in Theatre and Drama and Diploma courses in Music therapy and mrudangam. The students get ample opportunity to understand the glorious history of theatre and different schools of thought. The curriculum exposes the creative aspects of performing arts like playwriting, acting, directing, technical designing, and in the case of Music keeping the axis on Karnatic music from singing to composing.

Our classical and folk traditions are being taught along with the present global trends in contemporary world theatre and Music. As theatre assimilates all other art forms, the course is designed to encompass allied arts like yoga, martial arts, cinema, and television. Experts in different fields of arts are invited from all around the world to give lectures, demonstrations, and practical classes other than the routine classes. Play productions and short film productions are regular by faculty, guest directors, and also by students of each semester. The school conducts students’ placement programme, seminars, and workshops in collaboration with abroad universities. Alumni of our school are working in the field of drama, films, music, and other mass media in India and abroad and also in government cultural bodies. The emerging areas in theatre studies like Performance studies, Theatre therapy, Media studies, Communication studies, Folklore, and post media studies are incorporated in the Postgraduate syllabus. The Music section of the school conducts a faculty training program in Music Therapy.
