School of drama established in 1977, under the able directorship of Prof. G Shankara Pillai, is the foremost institution in India giving academic training in the practical and theoretical aspect of drama and theatre. The Courses offered are B.T.A (bachelor of theatre arts), M.T.A (master of theatre arts), M.A (music), M.Phil, and Ph.D. The students get an opportunity to understand the glorious history of theatre and different schools of thought. The curriculum exposes the creative aspects of performing arts like playwriting, acting, directing, technical designing. Our classical and folk traditions are being taught along with the present global trends in contemporary world theatre. As theatre assimilates all other art forms, the course is designed to encompass allied arts like yoga, martial arts, cinema, and television. Experts in different fields of arts are invited from all around the world to give lectures. Play production and short film productions are regular by faculty guest directors and also by students of each semester. The school conducts students’ placement program seminars and workshops in collaboration with abroad universities. Alumni of our school are working in the field of drama, films, music, and mass media in India and abroad and also in government
cultural bodies.

The Music section of the school conducts a faculty training program in Music Therapy and an advanced course in Mruthangam. School keeps frequent interactions with industry and participates in all major prestigious theatre events in India and abroad. 

The alumni association was formed in 2003.
